2011
Le Mans Series ~ Round 2, Spa Francorchamps
Round
2 of the 2011 season took the Le Mans
Series back to one of the most popular
race tracks in Europe; the fabulous Spa-Francorchamps
circuit in the Ardennes region of eastern
Belgium. Renown for its demanding high-speed
corners, tricky hairpins, and fabulous
scenery, Spa is high on every
driver's list of favourite circuits. This
year - as it did in 2010 - the 1000 Kilometres
of Spa-Francorchamps was also a final
testing opportunity for teams preparing
for the 24 Hours at Le Mans in June, but
the difference in 2011 was that the race
also doubled as a round of the new
Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. All the big
names were expected to be present, and
a grid of nearly 60 cars had been anticipated
for the six-hour race.
For RML AD Group, the test
would have been to see what difference the
new sized restrictors would make to the
performance gap the team endured last time
out at Paul Ricard, but an accident in
second practice effectively ended the team's
weekend. Up until that point, the HPD ARX-01d
had seemed far more competitive, and the
prospects had looked good.
