X-Pro Digital Image Recorder

X-Pro Digital Image Recorder, base unitOne of the most impressive outcomes of the racetrack partnership between CCTV specialists AD Group and RML has been the development of the X-Pro Digital Image Recorder (DIR).

This multi-channel digital recorder has been specifically designed for motor racing and rallying applications, and draws upon the world-beating experience and innovative technology devised by AD Group. Combined with RML’s motorsport pedigree and understanding, and tested to extremes after six years of some of the most demanding track conditions imaginable, the X-Pro DIR is probably the best on-board CCTV package available in motor racing today. X-Pro Digital Image Recorder, still imageFully network-capable and using the Internet standard TCP/IP protocol, the X-Pro DIR can be readily accessed via a standard Ethernet connection (10BASE-T and 100BASE-T compatible). Its ability to multiplex and record from up to 8 video cameras¹ whilst also handling 2 audio channels, makes the X-Pro DIR one of the most powerful race recorders available today.

X-Pro Digital Image Recorder, tested and developed by RML AD GroupThe unit can be configured to record using either the MPEG4 or M-JPEG format at up to 100 frames² per second on a standard removable Compact Flash (CF) Card. X-Pro DIR can also apply different recording rates that allow more important cameras to be prioritised in the recording sequence.

The system can be further configured to alter the recording speed from each of the camera channels by means of three ‘Event’ inputs, making it possible to record any incident at a much faster rate than normal. For example, a camera in the engine bay could be switched to a higher recording rate if the engine oil pressure drops below a preset ‘alarm’ level.

Aside from being able to monitor car performance from previously unimagined angles, one of the greatest strengths of the X-Pro DIR is as a driver training aid. RML’s driver pairing of Thomas Erdos and Mike Newton use footage drawn from on-track practice sessions to improve driving techniques and enhance their understanding of new, and even familiar circuits. Mike attributes his race-on-race personal improvements to the X-Pro DIR.

With RML AD Group's transition from open-topped prototype racing to enclosed coupé (2008/2009), the value of the X-Pro DIR as a means of supplying the driver with instant, unimpeded rear-view vision has also been exploited by the team. New armour-encased high definition rear-view camera units have been specially developed to ensure longevity and reliability and have proved invaluable as the team competes in the Le Mans Series and Le Mans 24 Hours. Images are included (right) to illustrate the cockpit and rear deck installations.
